Well Michelle and Ramon, not any one big thing comes to memory. I do remember the most incredible electric dam, getting to Iguazu from the Paraguay side, bbq meats at the big steakhouses, everything so cheap if you have foreign currency, fried river fish, the incredible heat in February, beautiful and restful countryside, my good friend Elisa Echague of ACDI/VOCA, almost like Panama without the humidity, and credit unions with big offices and long lines of people throughout the country. Elisa says you're an exciting person full of energy. Kendall

So, I did ask my Peruvian mother in law about Paraguay. You should know she is well-traveled; for her jewelry business she personally gets base material in China, ships it to Brazil for finishing/gold plating, and then sells it wholesale in Venezuela. On a regular basis. She racks up lots more frequent flyer miles than I did in my heyday of mucho travel. That is to say, she's been around.

The discussion went a bit like this-- it was a month or so ago, when I was doing some translations for Fundación Paraguaya.

Me: "What is Paraguay known for? Meat? Music? Dance? Ancient culture? Illicit drugs? Dictatorships?"

She: "Hmmm Hay mucha probreza. A lot of poverty. I mean, we all had military dictatorships in the 70s, but theirs was definitely one of the worst. You hear all about the Shining Path in Perú, the Dirty War in Argentina, and Pinochet's regime in Chile, but the Paraguayans were definitely worse off. Some say that even today, the country looks like it never left the 1950s. So I'd say that suppression and underdevelopment is what they are know for most. Lots of poverty".

Well Michella, allí está. Not really my personal opinion, but sometimes you gotta trust someone on her word :)
