The well-educated Iraqi doctor sitting next to me almost caught me in my web of lies though; he recognized my east-coast jive immediately. "Australia you say? That's funny, you sound American..." I snapped into a story about how although I had studied for many years in the States, I was thoroughbred Aussie. Didn't stay long enough to find out if he bought it. Lesson #10: Don't lie to Iraqis! As for the embassy, it's hard to say. They aren't exactly know as being, uh...responsive, let's say, here. But I do think in a sticky situation, it doesn't hurt to have them on your side.
