What a fascinating and eyeopening story. Rai seems like a really rare individual, a mixture of innovative, outside the box thinking and extreme compassion and caring for his fellow man. To a westerner like me that individuaiism doesn't always combine with a love of community. He's an inspiration.
I will read on.
This is a great blog, Betsy

From their website: A self-sufficient agricultural high school, which teaches organic agriculture and entrepreneurial skills to low-income youth from rural areas, transforming them from “poor campesinos” into “rural entrepreneurs”.

Here is their link to the school information. If one hits home button, you can find contact links and more information. http://www.fundacionparaguaya.org.py/index.php?c=307

I wonder if he could open a working school for agriculture if he sold rice at the market rate and used the profits to get buildings and staff.

It seems that crop rotation might be an area that he could enhance production. It is brought up in some of these links...

Dear Jackie,

Rai's full name is the mouthful "I Made Indra Bangasawan." I probably should have clarified this for lenders like you, so thanks for bringing it to my attention. I really appreciate your kind words. Rai really inspired me, and so I'm glad that his story was able to touch you.

Best, Lander

Heifer International does quite a lot with sustainable agriculture, generally in that same word-of-mouth style. www.heifer.org

Hi Lander,

It was with the first photo you posted of Rai that I recognized it as being one of the borrowers I lent to. Without the photos you posted I wouldn't have realized it was the same person because the names seem so different. Is "Rai" his preferred nickname? I use an abbreviated version of my first name too so I could definitely understand that. :)

One reason I really wanted to support this borrower is because of the mention in the loan write-up that "training to local farmers are given regularly to enable them to get optimum result from their farms". Reading your blog now has really led me to be very impressed with this borrower, with all he is trying to do, all he is doing, and all he has done! What an inspiring young man!

Thank you so much for the time and work you put into this blog entry, it means a lot to me as one of the lenders supporting Rai! It's really great that this personal story also elucidates some of the local life conditions for the people of that area on a somewhat larger scale as well. I may be a bit biased (being a lender to this borrower), but I really loved this blog entry of yours (except for the part about the cockfight :()!

I really wish I had some knowledge of agricultural organizations, but unfortunately I don't. :(

Kind regards,
Jackie
