Carolyn, I didn't personally run across any microfinance institutions in Uzbekistan but I did a quick check at mixmarket.org. There are a few small organizations but one large one called Mikrokredit Bank based in Tashkent. Glad you enjoyed the blog and keep up the good work with supporting those in UZ.

Chuck Norris is more than enough!

Re: the appeal of America - I know that Americans have it drilled into them from an early age that you can be anything you want to be if you work hard enough. But surely this is a lie - not everyone can be a doctor or a president or the next Chuck Norris, no matter how hard they work. You still need to be super intelligent or great at martial arts. And even if you are, and you work hard, nothing is guaranteed. But perhaps the illusion of choice and the hope it brings with it is, like Chuck, enough.

Thank you for this valuable insight. It helps me better understand what drives people ahead. And better understand why I find KIVA such a great idea.

Hi,
I hope you visited IMON while in Khojand. I work for Mercy Corps, one of IMON's founding orgs and I was just in Dushanbe last week. Hope you enjoyed your travels. Kiva is doing some great things for microfinance.
