In the US, I feel so bad because the lottery tickets are overwhelmingly bought by people who can ill-afford to waste their money that way. It seems wrong that we as a society exploit their hopes and their lack of math skill in this way to pay for public education or public anything at all. I know it's voluntary but it's so wrong. Why do we exploit the poor like this? I feel that it's shameful.

This pyramid scheme you describe sounds similar. It's terrible that people fall for them.

Courtney, thanks for sharing. I was totally unaware of pyramid schemes down here, although it figures their popularity among a poorer populace. I feel for Dolly and her community! :(

Wow! I actually had never thought of pyramid schemes and their impact on the poor. I wonder... is the legal system in Peru one that cracks down on pyramid schemes? I also wonder... are they home-grown? Or are they exploitative schemes exported from North America??

The pitfalls of pyramid schemes are well-known, but still many people all over the world fall for them over and over. The poor seek relief and it can sound so tempting. While Dolly suffered the consequences, she has also worked hard to rebuild her life, only now, she is wiser for it all too.

Wishing Dolly the best,
