In this 3.5 minute video, see what it’s like to spend the day with a loan officer from one of Kiva’s lending partners. Hanifa Seme (Credit Officer with Small and Micro Enterprise Programme in Kenya) and Steve Grey (Kiva Fellow) walk “The Pipeline”, a densely populated urban area in Kitengela just outside Nairobi, Kenya. They meet with 9 potential Kiva borrowers to get the information for their Kiva website profiles.

I was shocked by how urban “The Pipeline” is. Being form the backwaters of Louisiana this looks like another world to me. Can anyone tell me more about this place. Is there power in most of those apartments? running water? Is there good amounts of employment or are jobs hard to find?
5. Steve Grey (Kiva Fellow) | 22 June 2010 at 23:13
Yes, there is electricity and running water in most of those apartments. High-density apartments like you see in the video are not common in Kenya. You’ll find them in and around Nairobi and a few other places. Most poor people live in shacks that they’ve “constructed” from salvaged scrap wood and metal.
According to the CIA Factbook, unemployment in Kenya is 40%, so the economy still has a long way to go to create jobs for everyone who wants one.

Awesome Steve, thanks for sharing what a day in the life of a Kenyan loan officer and small business owner looks like.
